This is a review of The Coleridge Hotel in Valetta, Malta for our stay in March 2023.
The Coleridge Hotel is a 4-star boutique hotel in the heart of Valetta, it is situated in the cultural centre near prime walking distance to Valetta’s landmarks and food and drink destinations.
Although described as a hotel, our room The Hatley was situated next to the main building and was its own dedicated townhouse with two floors. Including a kitchenette.
Overview of The Coleridge
Steeped in history, the hotel’s past is shrouded in mystery. All that is known is that the building dates back to the early 1600s when Valletta was being crafted by the finest European architects and engineers of the day. The building itself has been in good company over the years. Palazzo Carafa next door was home to Knights of St John Grandmaster Gregorio Carafa, and this early Baroque palace was used to accommodate his key employees and friends. Our namesake, British poet Samual Taylor Coleridge, also stayed nearby and wrote extensively about his time on the island.
Review of The Hatley Suite at The Coleridge, Valetta
Review of The Coleridge Hotel, Valetta suites. As mentioned, our accommodation was the Hatley room, the largest suite The Coleridge offers. Has its own independent entrance.
The ground floor includes a spacious 35 square metre lounge area with marble floor throughout. It incorporates a full kitchen and dining area, with a vaulted ceiling left in natural stone.
The original old stone staircase leads to the first floor, which enjoys an open-plan bedroom. The bedroom has a faux-fresco wall which adds to the opulence of the baroque aesthetic.
The marble bathroom, consisting of a free-standing cast iron bath and full-size shower are also in the bedroom. What we were unaware of when booking is the shower is also situated in the bedroom area and is in full view of the room. Which does give the room an air of damp, which is unpleasant anytime you shower.
Other than the shower being in the bed area. The bath is unusable, as the water tank only has a limited amount of hot water which only fills in a one third of the bath before the water goes ice cold. Which is a shame, as as aesthetically pleasing as the bathtub is. It would have been nice to use if after a long day of exploring.
Another gripe was the noise levels in the apartment, with a one-week stay the outdoor noise travelled throughout both floors. Often it felt like the conversations outside were happening on our ground floor.
An improvement would be to have a full-length mirror in the suite. The mirror above the dressing table is not suitable for anyone applying makeup or getting ready for an evening.
Facilities
The internet provided he internet speeds are adequate within the suite but there is poor signal in the main bedroom area.
Cellular reception is also limited to 4G in the area, dropping to 3G inside the building. The site doesn’t have any facilities on site such as a restaurant, bar or a seated reception.
Food and Drink
A continental buffet-style breakfast is provided daily between 8am-11am. The breakfast was simple and had a mixture of breads, pastries, cheeses and meats daily with some small hot food plates. Tea and coffee’s are provided on order by the staff.
The Coleridge were very accommodating for a dairy allergy and were happy to provide any foods for dietary reasons.
Review of the Location, of The Coleridge Valetta
The Coleridge Hotel is located in the heart of Valletta. Offering prime walking distance to the city’s landmarks, as well as food and drink destinations. As a result, the hotel’s location is convenient for guests who want to explore the city and its surroundings.
Service
Housekeeping came in daily to ensure the room was tidy and new towels were provided.
The staff were very friendly and at hand for any questions and provided numbers for out of hours when the reception was closed.
Overall Review of Our Stay at The Coleridge, Valetta
If you are looking for an authentic stay in Valetta and want to experience a traditional Maltese town house, The Coleridge is a beautiful building.
However if you are a light sleeper and suffer from damp allergies you may find The Coleridge unsuitable. However overall, our experience was positive and having our own private space for a week allowed us to feel at home in Valetta.
