History of the Cathedral

St. John’s Co-Cathedral, a stunning masterpiece of Baroque architecture, was built in the 16th century by the Order of St. John. The cathedral is a testament to the group of knights who played an important role in Malta’s history. It has not only withstood the test of time. It has also survived numerous wars and natural disasters that would have destroyed lesser buildings.

Inside the cathedral, you’ll find ornate decorations and beautiful artwork that date back centuries. The cathedral’s ornate interior, with its intricate carvings and frescoes, is a feast for the eyes and a testament to the skill of the artisans who created it.

The cathedral is home to several chapels, each with its own unique design and history. One of the most impressive features of St Johns Co-Cathedral is the marble floor. It is made up of over 400 intricately designed tombstones. It’s truly a sight to behold.

Caravaggio’s Iconic Painting

A visit to St Johns Co-Cathedral also means experience famous art.

The cathedral is home to several impressive works of art, but one of the most famous and notable is Caravaggio’s painting “The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist”. The painting is located in the oratory of the cathedral and is considered to be one of Caravaggio’s masterpieces. It depicts the moment when John the Baptist is beheaded. It is regarded as a powerful and emotional work of art.

The painting is striking in its realism and attention to detail. Caravaggio uses dramatic lighting to create a sense of depth and movement, and the expressions on the faces of the figures in the painting are hauntingly realistic. The blood and gore of the beheading are also depicted in a realistic and graphic manner. It makes the painting a powerful and emotional representation of the moment.

Caravaggio’s painting has a rich history, and its inclusion in St Johns Co-Cathedral is particularly significant. The painting was commissioned by the Knights of Malta in 1608 and was originally intended to be displayed in the oratory of the Knights’ headquarters. However, it was ultimately moved to St Johns Co-Cathedral, where it has remained ever since.

“The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist” is a must-see for anyone visiting St Johns Co-Cathedral. Its striking realism and emotional resonance make it one of the most important works of art in Malta. It is a testament to the skill of Caravaggio as an artist.

Important to Know Before Your Visit

On your visit to St Johns Co-Cathedral remember that you are appropriately dressed for a religious site, including no heels as the floors can be damaged. Flip-flops are provided at a cost if you forget.

Headsets are provided for your walkthrough however the layout of the “tour” is less than optimal. I also found the headphones really uncomfortable as the wires were short, and was wearing a hair band so it wouldn’t fit on my head. So if you have your own wired headphones to hand you may be better off plugging in your own.

The lanyard was also not the most comfortable. There are several museums and galleries that provide audio sets to accompany the experience however this one is the most ill-designed experience I have come across.

You are best to go through the cathedral naturally as you walk through. Rather than sticking to the headset schedule as you will find yourself tangled in large groups rather than taking in the site itself.

It’s a destination that’s sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits, and it’s a must-see for anyone travelling to Malta.

We personally felt the cathedral was worth a visit simply for the Caravaggio artworks. The room Caravaggio’s work is. It is dimly lit yet the paintings illuminate the dark space, it is a wonderful experience for anyone who enjoys art.
