5 Day Itinerary Guide to Malta

A five-day itinerary is the perfect amount of time to explore all that Malta has to offer. Malta is a small island nation, but it’s packed with history, culture, and stunning scenery. Despite its small size, there’s plenty to see and do on the island.

This itinerary will take you to some of the island’s most beautiful and historic sites, from the ancient walled city of Mdina to the stunning Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. With this itinerary, you’re sure to experience the best that Malta has to offer in just five days.

Day 1 in Malta – Visit Mdina & Rabat

For day 1 in Malta, we suggest visiting Mdina and Rabat. In Mdina, visitors should take a stroll through the winding streets of the old city, visit the St. Paul’s Cathedral and the St. Agatha’s Chapel, and admire the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Falson Palazzo, a beautiful 13th-century building that now houses a museum of art and antiques. Afterward, visitors should head to Fontanella Tea Garden, a charming little café known for its delicious cakes and impressive views of the island.

In Rabat, visitors should visit the Roman Villa, a fascinating archaeological site that offers a glimpse into life on the island during the Roman period. Visitors should also visit the churches in the area, such as St. Paul’s Church and the Church of St. Dominic. Additionally, visitors can explore the town of Rabat and its historic landmarks, such as the Casa Bernard, a beautiful 16th-century house that now houses a museum of local history.

Day 2 in Malta – Visit the Three Cities

On the second day of the itinerary, visitors should discover the Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. They can take a look at the stunning views of the Grand Harbour and the fortifications that once protected the island from invaders.

They can visit Fort St. Angelo, The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception to see the beautiful painting of The Madonna and Child by Italian painter Polidoro Veneziano, and the Malta at War Museum to learn more about the island’s role in World War II.

Visitors can also take a walk along Birgu Bay which is a stunning location on a hot day.

Day 3 in Malta – Island Hop to Gozo and Comino

On the third day of the itinerary, take a boat to Gozo, Malta’s sister island. Start your day by visiting Xlendi Bay, a stunning natural harbor surrounded by cliffs and crystal-clear waters. Take a swim or snorkel in the bay or rent a kayak to explore the rugged coastline.

Afterward, head to Victoria (also known as Rabat) to explore the Citadel, a fortified city that dates back to the Bronze Age. The Citadel is home to several historic landmarks, including the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Museum of Archaeology. Take a stroll along the city walls for stunning views of the island’s landscape.

If you have more time, consider visiting other attractions on Gozo, such as the Ggantija Temples, one of the oldest free-standing structures in the world.

Alternatively, you can spend the day relaxing on one of Gozo’s many beaches, such as Ramla Bay or San Blas Bay.

You can also head to Comino Island which is a small and uninhabited island located between Malta and Gozo. It is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery, and it’s the perfect place to spend a relaxing day out in nature. The highlight of Comino Island is undoubtedly the Blue Lagoon, a sheltered bay with crystal-clear water that’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. Visitors can also explore the rugged coastline of the island by taking a hike or renting a kayak.

Day 4 in Malta – Explore the City of Valetta

On day 4, explore the capital city of Valletta. The city is known for its stunning architecture, rich history, and lively atmosphere. Start your day with a stroll through the Lower Barakka Gardens, a stunning park that offers panoramic views of the Grand Harbour.

Then, head to the Upper Barakka Gardens to see the Saluting Battery, a historic cannon that fires every day at noon. Walk down the Parliament Steps and visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral, a stunning Baroque church that’s home to some of Caravaggio’s most famous paintings. Don’t miss the chance to admire the intricate details and vivid colors of the carvings and paintings.

For brunch, head to Manouche, a popular café known for its delicious pastries and coffee. Take your time to explore the city’s narrow streets and alleys, and don’t forget to stop by the many shops and boutiques that line the streets.

With its charming atmosphere and stunning architecture, Valletta is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Malta.

Day 5 in Malta – See Mellieha

For the final day of the itinerary, head to Mellieha, a charming town located in the north of the island. Start your day by taking a stroll along Mellieha Bay, one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. The bay is surrounded by stunning cliffs and crystal-clear water, making it the perfect place to swim, snorkel or just relax in the sun.

Afterward, head to the town center to explore the historic landmarks and local shops. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Mellieha Parish Church, a stunning Baroque church that’s home to several beautiful paintings and sculptures. The church is located on a hill, so it offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

In the evening, head back to Mellieha Bay to watch the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea. With its stunning scenery and charming atmosphere, Mellieha is the perfect place to end your five-day itinerary in Malta.
