When we visited Santorini we tried to jam-pack as many activities as we could for the week. However, when visiting an island for the first time it can be overwhelming.
Santorini is an incredibly beautiful island in the Aegean Sea and there are plenty of activities to choose from. Here are some to consider for your adventure.
Visit Oia Village and Watch the Sunset
Oia is famous for its breathtaking white buildings and blue domes. Watching the sunset over the village is a must-see while in Santorini. The best thing about this itinerary addition is that it is completely free.
You can walk around the village, explore its narrow streets, and visit the Oia Castle for a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea. Wherever you stop to take in the sunset it will definitely be a view to remember.
Explore the Ancient Ruins of Akrotiri
If you prefer a more cultural and historical addition to your travels. Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age settlement that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption and is considered the most important prehistoric settlement in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Take a Boat Tour of the Caldera
A boat tour of the caldera is a great way to see Santorini from a different perspective. You can admire the stunning cliffs and rock formations, and even swim in the hot springs. However bare in mind they may not be all that “hot”.
You can also visit the small island of Thira and explore its traditional villages when on your boat tour.
Swim at the Red Beach
The Red Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Santorini. It is named for its distinctive red sand and clear blue waters. You can swim, sunbathe on the beach, and enjoy the stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding cliffs.
You can reach this beach via a car or boat depending on your preference.
Go hiking from Fira to Oia
This is a popular activity for those looking to stay active while also taking in the beautiful views of Santorini.
The hike from Fira to Oia takes about 3 hours and is well worth the effort. Along the way, you can see the traditional villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli, and enjoy breathtaking views of the caldera. The hike is best for intermediate hikers as there are some rocks that will slip underfoot so it is advised to have sturdy footwear,
Visit the Santo Winery
Santorini is known for its wine, and the Santo Winery is one of the best places to sample it. You can take a tour of the winery and vineyards, and even participate in a wine tasting. From the winery’s terrace, you can also enjoy the stunning views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea.
Have a Meal at Amoudi Bay
Amoudi Bay is a picturesque fishing village located at the foot of Oia. There are several seaside tavernas where you can enjoy fresh seafood and take in the beautiful views. You can also swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of the bay.
It is a perfect spot to get a sea breeze whilst enjoying the sun.
Relax at the Black Beach
The Black Beach is known for its black volcanic sand and crystal-clear waters. It is a great place to relax and soak up the sun. You can also try water sports such as windsurfing and jet skiing.
Visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thira
If you are interested in the culturla history of the island. Adding Thira Museum is a must.
This museum houses artefacts from the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, and is a great place to learn more about the history of Santorini. You can see the well-preserved pottery, tools, and everyday objects that were used by the inhabitants of Akrotiri.
Go Scuba Diving in the Aegean Sea
For the underwater adventurer, you can book a scuba lesson and discover marine-life in and around the island. The Aegean Sea is home to a variety of marine life, and scuba diving is a great way to explore it. There are several dive shops in Santorini that offer guided tours. You can see colourful fish, octopuses, and even shipwrecks.
Visit the Monastery of Prophet Elias
A scenic photo spot. This monastery is located on the highest point of Santorini and offers stunning views of the island. You can visit the church and the museum, and learn about the history of the monastery.
Explore the Village of Pyrgos
Pyrgos is a traditional village located in the centre of Santorini. You can walk around its narrow streets and admire the traditional architecture, and visit the Venetian Castle for a panoramic view of the island.
The villages give you an insight into local island life and is a great way to spend a morning.
Take a Cooking Class
Take a cooking class – Santorini is known for its delicious cuisine, which is a great way to learn about it. You can learn how to cook traditional dishes such as fava, tomato fritters, and moussaka, and enjoy the fruits of your labour afterwards.
Go Wine Tasting at Domaine Sigalas
Domaine Sigalas is a family-owned winery that produces some of the best wines in Santorini. You can take a tour of the winery and vineyards, and enjoy a wine tasting accompanied by local cheeses and snacks.
Visit the Byzantine Castle Ruins
The Byzantine Castle Ruins are located in the village of Emporio and offer stunning views of the island. You can explore the ruins and learn about the history of the castle.
Take a Donkey Ride
Donkey rides are a traditional way to explore Santorini. You can take a ride from the old port of Thira to the top of the caldera, and enjoy the stunning views along the way.
